Aikaterini Gatsiou is a Lecturer in RNA Immunology at Lancaster University, affiliated with the Department of Biomedical and Life Sciences and the Data Science Institute. Her research focuses on RNA's role in regulating biological processes, particularly immunity and gene expression through intrinsic RNA traits.
Her lab investigates RNA dynamics using next-generation sequencing, genome editing, and computational tools. Key research areas include:
- Developing single-nucleotide resolution RNA dynamics tools
- Exploring RNA-innate immunity interactions
- RNA modifications in cardiovascular disease
- RNA-based therapeutics for immune disorders
Recent publications (2023-2024) emphasize RNA editing mechanisms in inflammation and cardiovascular contexts, notably ADAR2's role in immune cell trafficking and therapeutic applications for heart disease.
Dr. Gatsiou teaches RNA regulation in Genetics modules (BIOL253/311) and supervises undergraduate/postgraduate research (BIOL387/a, BIOL469/470). Her research is funded by BBSRC and Lancaster University's Faculty of Health & Medicine.
She leads the RNA Immunology lab within the Microbes, Pathogens and Immunity research group, integrating molecular biology, biotechnology, and computational science to advance precision medicine.
