Sörbom's research examines political engagement in various forms, with particular interest in how views on political engagement have changed over time. Her work spans social movements, activism, political globalization, and corporate political organization, often focusing on transnational think tanks and their influence on policy agendas. She combines qualitative sociological approaches with organizational analysis to understand how global political landscapes are shaped by non-state actors, particularly examining the role of think tanks in illiberal regimes and climate policy.
Her recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on transnational political organization, particularly examining the World Economic Forum and think tanks. Her work combines anthropological and sociological approaches to understand how global policy agendas are shaped, showing a clear trajectory from social movements to institutional analysis of global governance structures. The research spans political sociology, organizational studies, and futures studies, with particular attention to how anticipation and future-making practices shape contemporary politics.
Sörbom has secured significant research funding from organizations including the Baltic Sea Foundation, Riksbank, Swedish Research Council, and FORMAS for projects such as "Think Tanks in Illiberal Regimes" (2019-2023) and studies on corporate-run think tanks related to climate policy (2023-2026).
She has supervised numerous doctoral students including Dr. Karin Edberg, Dr. Eva Karlberg, Dr. Maarja Saar, and Dr. Joanna Mellquist, along with approximately 30 other C- and D-level students.
