Professor Adam Benham is a faculty member in the Department of Biosciences at Durham University, serving as Director of Postgraduate Studies. His academic career includes a first-class honours in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford and a PhD in transplantation immunology from University College London. He has held postdoctoral positions at the Netherlands Cancer Institute and Utrecht University before establishing his independent research group at Durham University in 2005.
His research focuses on protein quality control in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), particularly mechanisms governing antigen presentation and oxidative protein folding. Key areas include:
- Mechanisms of disulfide bond formation in proteins
- Role of protein disulfide isomerases (PDIs) in male fertility
- Proteostasis in skin biology and disease
- Applications in cancer vaccine design
Teaching responsibilities include leading the Immune Systems module for undergraduate biosciences and contributing to disease biology teaching. He serves on editorial boards for Antioxidants and Redox Signaling and Biology Direct, and chairs the Biochemical Society Training Theme Panel.
Research funding has come from major bodies including BBSRC, MRC, Wellcome Trust, and international partnerships. His work has been recognized through high-impact publications in PNAS, Scientific Reports, and Cells, with over 150 citations in the last decade.
