Almqvist's research centers on youth politics in authoritarian contexts, especially in Jordan and the broader Middle East. He investigates how autocratic regimes adapt to neoliberal reforms through institutions like Government-Organized NGOs (GONGOs) targeting youth, and examines the implications for citizenship and political participation. His work also engages with the UN's Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) Agenda and critiques of international law in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
His recent publications span diverse formats including academic journals, book reviews, and media commentary. The research output reveals a consistent focus on Middle Eastern politics, particularly Jordan and Israel-Palestine, with recurring themes of youth engagement, authoritarian resilience, electoral processes, and international legal frameworks. His work bridges academic analysis and public discourse, often addressing contemporary political developments through critical theoretical lenses.
Almqvist is an active researcher in the SWEMENA network, a collaborative project connecting Swedish scholars on Middle Eastern studies. While specific grants are not detailed, his involvement in this network indicates collaborative research efforts across institutions.
He is associated with the Qualitative Methods Lab (LSSMC) and actively participates in the SWEMENA network, contributing to interdisciplinary research on the Middle East. His collaborative work extends to international conferences and media engagements on human rights and Middle Eastern politics.
