Hartmut Rohde

Hartmut Rohde is a leading European violist and professor at the University of the Arts Berlin. He specializes in historically informed interpretations across classical, romantic, and contemporary repertoires. His chamber music collaborations include partnerships with Janine Jansen, Jörg Widmann, and Christian Tetzlaff, and he co-founded the Mozart Piano Quartet. From 2014–2017, he served as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra in Wrocław, leading acclaimed performances with artists like Giovanni Antonini and Reinhard Goebel. Rohde has conducted orchestras such as the Biel Solothurn Symphony and Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, appearing at venues including the Berlin Philharmonie and Vienna Konzerthaus.

As a violist, he performs globally at venues like Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and Ravinia Festival, collaborating with conductors Kent Nagano and Paavo Järvi. His discography includes recordings for EMI Classics, Decca, and cpo, featuring works by composers like Penderecki and Brett Dean. Rohde’s 2019 highlights included the Naantali Festival and a Vienna Konzerthaus performance with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra.

He has received the Supersonic Award (2004) and commissioned works from composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki and Olli Mustonen. His artistic activities span performance, pedagogy, and collaboration with ensembles worldwide.
