Dr. Marcus Thompson is Institute Professor of Music at MIT, where he founded both the MIT Chamber Music Society and the Emerson/Harris private study program. An acclaimed violist, he has performed as soloist with major orchestras including Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and National Symphony, specializing in works by composers such as John Harbison, Penderecki, and Hindemith.

His research interests encompass contemporary classical repertoire, performance practice, and music education. As Artistic Director of the Boston Chamber Music Society since 2009, Dr. Thompson has premiered numerous contemporary works. Recent recordings include Elena Ruehr's 'Shadow/Light' and John Harbison's Viola Concerto with BMOP.
