Hartmut Rohde is Professor of Viola at the Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste Berlin) within the Faculty of Music, specifically in the Institute for Artistic Training - Orchestral Instruments and Conducting. As a founding member of the Mozart Piano Quartet, one of the world's leading chamber ensembles, he has established an international career as both soloist and chamber musician.
Rohde's research interests center on musical interpretation across historical periods, with particular emphasis on rhetoric and stylistics from Baroque to contemporary music. His work bridges performance practice with pedagogical innovation, focusing on developing each student's unique interpretive voice while providing rigorous audition preparation. He maintains an active commitment to contemporary repertoire through collaborations with composers including Jörg Widmann, Detlev Glanert, Brett Dean, and Wolfgang Rihm.
As a performer, Rohde appears regularly at major venues worldwide including Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He has recorded extensively for labels including EMI Classics, Decca, BMG/Sony, MDG, and Naxos, with recent releases featuring works by Gabriel Fauré.
