Derek Thomson is a Lecturer in Human Resource Management at Glasgow Caledonian University, affiliated with the Department of Management and Human Resource Management within the Glasgow School for Business and Society. His academic career focuses on emotion theories, public sector modernization, and HRM practices in educational contexts.
Thomson holds a PhD with a thesis titled ‘Emotion in Teaching: Developing an Understanding of the Emotional Side of Teaching Through the Importance of Context and Role Amongst Teachers and Classroom Assistants in Scottish Schools’, exploring emotional dynamics in educational environments. His research also addresses gender, wellbeing, and burnout in workplace settings.
He actively teaches HRM modules across all academic levels in his department and is currently preparing publications derived from his doctoral work. His scholarly interests extend to employment relations and the intersection of HR strategies with public sector reforms.
