Anthony Swainson

Anthony Swainson is a Senior Lecturer in Brass at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, specializing in low brass performance and pedagogy. Formerly Principal Tuba of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, he transitioned to focus on teaching, conducting, and composition in 1997. His career spans over 50 years, including roles with the Halle Orchestra and collaborations with orchestras across Scotland.

• Education: ARCM (Performance & Teaching) from Royal Manchester College of Music (now RNCM)

Research interests include brass pedagogy, orchestral performance practices, and composition/arranging for brass ensembles. His works are performed globally by leading brass artists.

As a conductor, he directs the Junior Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra and has led elite brass bands in UK and Scandinavia, achieving competition success. Over 30 compositions/arrangements have been recorded commercially.

Teaching legacy includes students securing prominent orchestral posts worldwide. Active in BBC ensemble direction and commercial recording projects since the 1970s.
