Dr. Şebnem Baran is an Assistant Professor of Film & Media Studies at Smith College. She earned her doctorate in cinema and media studies from the University of Southern California and holds bachelor's and master's degrees in political science and international relations from Boğaziçi University in Turkey. Her research explores how Anglo-American quality programming standards gain prominence in the global TV market during the post-streaming era.
Her scholarship focuses on television studies, media industries, online streaming platforms, TV formats, and audience/fan engagement. She teaches courses covering the global history of television, media industry analysis, streaming technologies, genre studies, and film/media theory methods.
