Eleanor Patterson serves as Associate Professor of Media Studies within the Communication & Journalism program at Auburn University's College of Liberal Arts. Her academic appointment focuses on the intersections of media industries, technologies, and audiences with particular attention to historical perspectives on broadcast distribution.
Dr. Patterson's research centers on broadcast history, media and cultural studies, audience and fan studies, media industries and labor, and gender and sexuality. Her work examines how media content circulates through formal and informal networks, with special attention to historical contexts from the mid-20th century to the present. She investigates how fan communities develop around media content and how distribution practices shape cultural meaning and community formation.
Her recent publications reveal consistent thematic patterns across media history, particularly examining how audiences engage with broadcast content through alternative distribution channels. Patterson's work demonstrates how fan practices and informal distribution networks have historically shaped media consumption patterns, often anticipating contemporary streaming culture. Her research spans multiple media forms including radio, television, and digital platforms, with particular attention to how gender and sexuality intersect with media distribution practices.
