Melanie E.S. Kohnen serves as Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Media Studies at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Her academic work bridges the micro-level of media events with macro-level cultural forces, examining how media industries and audiences interact on social media platforms and at events like San Diego Comic-Con, particularly regarding diversity in film, television, and digital media.
Her research interests include media industries, audience studies, digital platforms, videographic criticism, and Storymaps. Kohnen explores how media scholars can reimagine research tools and platforms, publishing in both traditional journals and innovative digital formats including video essays.
Her scholarly publications reveal consistent focus on fan culture, media diversity, and digital platforms, with particular attention to San Diego Comic-Con as a site for media promotion and fan engagement. Her work demonstrates how industry and audiences negotiate diversity across various media platforms, examining the intersection of fan culture, marketing strategies, and representation.
