k.g. Guttman (she/they) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Contemporary Dance at Concordia University, Montreal, and serves as Faculty in Residence for Studio Arts. They teach Intermedia courses including Advanced Practices in Video, Performance and Electronic Arts, and Performance Art across undergraduate and MFA levels, with active appointments from 2023-2025 following prior full-time faculty service from 2008-2013.
Education:
- PhD in Arts from Leiden University, Netherlands, funded by SSHRC
Guttman's research interrogates situated performance within Canada's settler colonial context through bodily memory, somatic practices, and social location as a white settler of Jewish and Irish descent. Their work critically examines collaboration, kinship, epigenetics, hospitality, and pedagogy while developing site-specific practices that disrupt modernity's autonomous frameworks by embracing relational entanglements and labor. Key methodologies integrate ritual, expanded video, and performative exhibitions to address decolonial imperatives and community encounter.
Scientific Awards:
- SSHRC funding for doctoral research on situated performance and practice
Guttman's grant history centers on SSHRC support for their PhD work, enabling critical exploration of colonial contexts through artistic practice. While no formal advisees are documented, their pedagogical approach manifests through community-engaged residencies and collaborative projects.
Artistic production occurs through international networks including l’Agora de la Danse, Canada Dance Festival, and 7A-11d collective, with current development of participatory installations like 'Dette sans raison' and digital responses to migration through Toronto Performance Art Collective's archives.
