William F. Maloney is a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) and currently serves as Lead Economist in the Development Economics Research Group at the World Bank. Previously, he was a Professor of Economics at the University of Illinois (1990–1997) and has held consulting roles at institutions including the World Bank and Harvard Kennedy School. His research focuses on informal labor markets, innovation, labor legislation, and productivity in developing economies. Education: Ph.D. in Economics, University of California Berkeley (1990) M.A. Economics, University of the Andes, Colombia (1982–1983) B.A. Economics & Political Science, Harvard University (1981) Research Interests: Maloney explores the intersection of labor markets and economic development, with particular emphasis on informality’s role in macroeconomic stability and innovation ecosystems. His work analyzes policy interventions to enhance productivity and formalization in emerging economies.
