Joong Hyoun Chin is an Associate Professor at the Department of Integrative Biological Sciences and Industry , Sejong University. His career spans over a decade at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) as a Scientist and Postdoc Fellow, and he currently leads the Plant Traits Development Lab. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Plant Breeding and Genetics from Seoul National University. Education Ph.D., Plant Breeding and Genetics (2005), Seoul National University M.S., Plant Breeding and Genetics (2000), Seoul National University B.S., Agronomy (1996), Seoul National University Research Interests : Dr. Chin focuses on rice and medicinal plant breeding for abiotic/biotic stress resistance, genomics-assisted breeding, and bio-industry system development. His work addresses climate change adaptation through traits like phosphorus-use efficiency, submergence tolerance, and high-temperature resilience. Article Trends : His recent publications emphasize rice genomics (e.g., phosphorus deficiency tolerance, hull-splitting genes), stress-resistant rice varieties (e.g., Sechanmi , Seso ), and medicinal plant research on milk thistle ( Silybum marianum ), including genome assembly, silymarin content analysis, and agricultural phenotyping. Scientific Awards : Research award, Society of Korean Breeding Science (2022) Best research award, Society of Korean Breeding Science (2018) Chungcheongnam-do Governor's Award (2019) RDA Honorary Overseas Scientist (2010) Editorial Roles : Dr. Chin serves on the editorial boards of Plant Breeding and Biotechnology , SABRAO Journal of Breeding and Genetics , and Scientific Data . His lab collaborates with institutions like the Rural Development Administration, CGIAR, and DNA Care Co., Ltd., aligning with UN SDGs for sustainable agriculture.
