Simone Ross is a Senior Lecturer at James Cook University, specializing in health professions education with a focus on social accountability, student support, and medical leadership development. She coordinates key programs including the Home Group program for MBBS students, the Health Self-Professional Self Care Program, and the Professionalism Education and Leadership Program. Her PhD (2024) established the first medical student leadership skills framework. She is leading a project to create a Centre of Excellence for Social Accountability in Australia and New Zealand. Education & Professional Background: Simone holds a PhD in medical education and has extensive experience in curriculum design and student support mechanisms. She teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including leadership modules in the Masters of Health Professional Education and Masters of Rural and Remote Health. Research Interests: Her research emphasizes social accountability in medical education, student well-being, and leadership development. Key areas include rural health workforce strategies, intercultural competence, and evidence-based student support systems. Recent work explores the impact of socially accountable curricula on graduate intentions and community health outcomes. Grants & Projects: Current leadership of the Towards Unity for Health Social Accountability Fellowship (2025) and collaboration on community-engaged medical education projects in the Philippines. Previously led a successful Indigenous community engagement initiative in North Queensland. Labs/Teams: Coordinates interdisciplinary teams across JCU’s medical education programs and collaborates with international networks like the Training for Health Equity Network (THEnet).
