Friederike von Schwerin-High serves as Professor of German and Russian and Coordinator of the German Section at Pomona College, where she has taught since 2005. Her instructional portfolio includes courses ranging from Elementary German to advanced seminars on Multicultural Germany and Systems of Worldviews. Her academic credentials include a Ph.D. and Master of Arts from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a Bachelor of Arts from Universitaet Heidelberg. Central to her scholarship is the investigation of how cultures represent difference through translation studies and alterity in narrative and philosophy. Her expertise spans the Age of Goethe, Thomas Mann, Turkish-German literature, and Shakespeare reception across German and Japanese contexts. She examines intersections between narrative form and philosophical concepts of otherness, with particular attention to 20th century fictional biography. Analysis of her publication record reveals consistent engagement with comparative methodologies, especially cross-cultural translation practices and biographical representation in literature. Her work demonstrates evolving focus from 18th century German literature to contemporary transnational narratives, with recurring emphasis on how texts mediate cultural difference. As co-editor of Pacific Coast Philology for the past five years, she actively shapes scholarly discourse in German studies. Her research trajectory indicates sustained commitment to examining identity construction through literary and philosophical frameworks, though specific grant funding details remain unreported in available materials.
