Toru Kamekawa is a Professor at Tokyo University of the Arts, specializing in acoustics and sound recording. He previously worked as a sound engineer at NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) from 1983 to 2002, gaining expertise in surround sound for HDTV. Since 2002, he has been an academic leader in audio engineering, focusing on multi-channel stereophony and spatial audio with height channels. He holds a PhD in Design from Kyushu University (2016) and a bachelor's degree in Acoustics Design from Kyushu Institute of Design (1983). His research emphasizes spatial impressions in surround sound systems and 22.2 multi-channel audio. He is deeply involved with the Audio Engineering Society (AES), serving as AES Governor, Vice President for the International Region (2013–2018), and chairing multiple AES conferences. His leadership roles include organizing major events like the 2010 International Conference on Spatial Audio and the 2018 Conference on Spatial Reproduction. He has received three AES Board of Governors Awards (2009, 2011, 2019) and the 1990 Shibata Prize for contributions to audio engineering. His professional affiliations include the Board of Governors of the Acoustical Society of Japan and the Japan Society of Music Perception and Cognition.
