Jeffrey E. Podos is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research focuses on the intersection of animal behavior, organismal biology, and evolutionary biology, with a particular emphasis on vocal communication in songbirds. He earned a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College (1989) and a Ph.D. from Duke University (1996). His work explores how biomechanical and physiological mechanisms influence the evolution of vocal behavior, including studies on song frequency, syntax, and perception in species such as Darwin's finches and Neotropical grassquits.
Key research locations include the Galápagos Islands, Brazil, and local sites in Massachusetts. Collaborations include projects with Regina Macedo at the Universidade de Brasília and Kiyoko Gotanda on Galápagos finch morphology and vocal diversification. Podos has led initiatives in grant writing for Amazonian researchers and served on editorial boards, including Advances in the Study of Behavior.
He has received awards such as the UMass Distinguished Teaching Award (2018) and ABS Fellow (2024). His lab has trained numerous students, including Katie Schroeder (Ph.D. 2024) and João Menezes (Ph.D. candidate). Research highlights include work on vocal performance limits, acoustic adaptation, and the evolutionary trade-offs in bird vocalizations.
Lab activities include bioacoustic analyses, high-speed video studies of display behaviors, and field playback experiments. Podos also engages in public outreach, such as Science Café events and lectures on Darwinian finches.
