Julia Hyland Bruno is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences at NJIT. Her research focuses on interdisciplinary studies of animal behavior, vocal learning in birds and mammals, and evolutionary mechanisms underlying communication systems. She holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from the CUNY Graduate School and a B.A. in History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science and Medicine from the University of Chicago.
Her work explores topics such as song rhythm development in zebra finches, genomic signatures of rhythmic synchronization, and cultural transmission in non-human animals. Key contributions include analyzing humpback whale song patterns and investigating aggressive responses in birds to brood parasites. Bruno also examines the neurobiological basis of social monogamy in songbirds and the role of dopamine in behavioral adaptations.
Publications span topics from bioacoustics to evolutionary medicine, including discussions on fever's evolutionary role and medical education outcomes. Her research integrates psychology, neuroscience, and ecology, bridging gaps between animal behavior and human cultural evolution.
