Lionel Dawson is a Professor in Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Oklahoma State University since July 2011. He also holds appointments as Professor of Theriogenology and Field Services at Langston University (since 2011), Adjunct Professor at TANUVAS, Veterinary Clinics in India (since 2016), and Adjunct Professor at University of Malaysia, College of Veterinary Medicine in Kelantan (since 2018). His educational background includes a BVSc from Madras Veterinary College, India (1978) and an MS from Iowa State University (1978-1980). He is board certified by the American College of Theriogenologists since 1983. BVSc, Madras Veterinary College, India, 1978 MS, Iowa State University, Ames, United States, 1978-1980 Dr. Dawson specializes in small ruminant reproduction with extensive research in goat and sheep breeding management, nutritional effects on reproduction, parasite resistance, and water quality impacts on small ruminant health and productivity. His work focuses on various breeds including Alpine, Spanish, Katahdin, Dorper, and St. Croix. He has conducted numerous studies on reproductive management, breeding soundness evaluation, and artificial insemination techniques for small ruminants. His scholarly output shows a clear focus on improving small ruminant production systems through genetic selection, nutritional management, and parasite control strategies. Recent publications emphasize practical applications for goat and sheep producers, particularly regarding water quality effects, nutritional supplementation, and genetic resistance to gastrointestinal parasites. His research bridges the gap between basic science and practical field applications for small ruminant producers. Oklahoma State University Regents Teaching Award (2021) Class hooder at graduation (2020, 2019) Mentoring award (2019) Longevity- 35 years award (2018) Dr. Dawson has been actively involved in teaching Small Animal Internal Medicine Clerkship Electives and Bovine Theriogenology courses. His grant funding includes multiple USDA NIFA Evans-Allen projects focused on small ruminant production systems, nutritional management, and parasite resistance. He has conducted extensive extension work including reproductive management workshops for small ruminant producers across Oklahoma and internationally.
