Dr. Abel B. Ekiri is a Lecturer in Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the University of Surrey's School of Veterinary Medicine, within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. He holds a veterinary degree from Makerere University (Uganda), and MS and PhD degrees in epidemiology from the University of Florida (USA). He is a board-certified Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (DACVPM) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). His work focuses on interdisciplinary One Health approaches to address animal and public health challenges in developed and resource-limited settings.
Dr. Ekiri’s research spans infectious disease epidemiology, antimicrobial stewardship, hospital-acquired infections, and zoonotic disease surveillance. Key areas include:
- Brucellosis and Rift Valley Fever surveillance in Tanzania
- Antimicrobial use practices in Nigeria, Uganda, and Ethiopia
- Johne’s Disease management in dairy cattle
- Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) epidemiology in Nigeria
He teaches modules on veterinary epidemiology, public health, and emerging diseases. His work emphasizes collaborative research, including roles at the One Health Institute (UC Davis) and North Dakota State University. Dr. Ekiri has contributed to global health initiatives such as the USAID PREDICT project, focusing on zoonotic disease detection and capacity building.
Publications highlight his expertise in livestock health, viral zoonoses, and antimicrobial resistance interventions. His current projects address antimicrobial use in sub-Saharan Africa and One Health approaches to transboundary diseases.
