Dr Nicola Lambe is a Reader at Scotland's Rural College (SRUC), based at the Hill & Mountain Research Centre. With over 25 years at SRUC, her research specializes in sheep genetics for sustainable livestock production, focusing on carcass quality, feed efficiency, disease resistance, and greenhouse gas mitigation. Research Interests: Dr Lambe develops breeding strategies incorporating novel traits like methane emissions reduction and resilience indicators. Her work utilizes advanced technologies including CT scanning, genomic selection, and feed intake monitoring to improve both traditional production traits and emerging sustainability metrics in sheep production systems. Articles Focus: Recent publications demonstrate applications of machine learning for carcass prediction, genome-wide association studies for meat quality traits, and genetic analyses of production efficiency in sheep. Research integrates precision agriculture technologies with breeding objectives. Projects & Grants: EU H2020 SMARTER: Small Ruminant Breeding for Efficiency and Resilience (€7M) Grass To Gas: Mitigating GHG emissions from sheep systems (Defra-funded) BBSRC/Innovate UK: Carcass trait phenotype feedback for genomic selection (£1.54M) TechCare: Welfare management technologies for small ruminants (€5.7M) Teaching & Supervision: Teaches genetics and development modules for SRUC degree programs, and supervises postgraduate research on sheep genetics, CT applications in livestock, and precision farming technologies.
