Barbara Stefanska is an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia, affiliated with the Faculty of Land and Food Systems and the Department of Food, Nutrition & Health. Her research focuses on nutriepigenomics, exploring how dietary bioactive compounds like polyphenols modulate epigenetic mechanisms in cancer prevention and therapy. She also serves on the editorial board of the British Journal of Pharmacology and leads the Stefanska Lab, which investigates epigenetic enzymes and chromatin-modifying proteins. Education: PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Nutritional Epigenomics) from Medical University of Lodz (2003–2007), Post-Doc in Cancer Epigenetics at McGill University (2008–2013) Her research examines the role of phytoestrogens in reversing DNA methylation patterns linked to cancer progression, with a particular emphasis on DNMTs , TETs , and chromatin interactions . Recent studies highlight their effects on aging-related genes and mitochondrial apoptosis in gastrointestinal cancers. Recent publications demonstrate a focus on epigenetic therapy , gene expression modulation, and nutritional interventions for diseases like hepatocellular carcinoma and breast cancer. Fellowship of the British Pharmacological Society (2024) Editor’s Performance Award, British Journal of Pharmacology (2018) Multiple Erasmus Plus Scholar awards (2018–2023) Dr. Stefanska supervises graduate students in Human Nutrition and co-authored over 15 high-impact publications between 2015–2025. Her lab employs cutting-edge genomic technologies and collaborates with institutions like Imperial College London and University of Missouri.
