Ioanna Andreadou is Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, School of Pharmacy, where she leads cardiovascular pharmacology research. With over 35 years of academic experience, she directs the Section of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and serves as Vice Chair of the Hellenic Society of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology. Her work bridges molecular pharmacology and clinical translation in cardioprotection. Education: Degree in Pharmacy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1988) PhD in Pharmacology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1994) Post-doctoral training: Leiden Amsterdam Center for Drug Research/Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (1994-1996) Post-doctoral training: The Hatter Cardiovascular Institute, University College London (2009) Her research focuses on molecular mechanisms of cardioprotection against ischemia/reperfusion injury, with emphasis on mitochondrial targets , redox signaling , and cardio-oncology . She pioneers investigations into drug-induced cardiotoxicity (particularly from proteasome inhibitors like carfilzomib) and natural product-based cardioprotective strategies (e.g., olive polyphenols). Her lab integrates preclinical models (murine, porcine), clinical pharmacology , and molecular screening to identify novel therapeutic targets for myocardial protection. Analysis of her recent publications (2023-2025) reveals three dominant trends: (1) SGLT2 inhibitors (especially empagliflozin) for endothelial protection in acute MI, (2) cardio-oncology mechanisms involving immune checkpoint inhibitors and proteasome inhibitors, and (3) mitochondrial targets for clinical translation. Her work increasingly employs multicenter preclinical studies (e.g., IMPACT initiative) and translational biomarkers related to endothelial glycocalyx and immune-metabolic crosstalk. Scientific distinctions: State Scholarship Foundation PhD Grant (1988-1991) Human Capital and Mobility Post-doctoral Fellowship (1994) European Science Foundation Fellowship (1995) Hellenic Society of Cardiology Training Grant (2007) Visiting Professorship at University of Turin (2017) As Editorial Board member for British Journal of Pharmacology and Basic Research in Cardiology , she shapes cardiovascular research discourse. Her grant leadership includes coordinating the EU-Cardioprotection COST Action network and securing Hellenic Society of Cardiology funding for cardio-oncology studies. She serves on Greece's National Drug Organization Scientific Council and Ministry of Health Narcotics Council. She leads a multidisciplinary research team within the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Section, collaborating with University College London's Hatter Institute and the European Network EU-Cardioprotection. Current projects include the IMPACT multicenter study on cardioprotective therapies and investigations into SGLT2 inhibitors' mechanisms beyond glucose control.
