Michael Mason is a Professor and Associate Director at the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering (GSBSE) at the University of Maine. His research focuses on single nanoparticle/nanoprobe photophysics, nanoprobe design for biomedical applications, and time-resolved single-molecule imaging spectroscopy. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry and Physics from the University of Puget Sound (1994-1995) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara (2000). His research interests include optimizing nanoprobes for high-resolution imaging in complex biological systems, studying photophysical properties of quantum dots and molecular fluorophores, and advancing single-molecule detection techniques. Key innovations involve combining high-efficiency optics with time-resolved spectroscopy to enhance signal-to-noise ratios in imaging. Publications span nanomaterial characterization, biomedical applications of nanoparticles, and environmental toxicity studies. His work often intersects with clinical diagnostics and materials science, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. He advises doctoral students Jeremy Grant and Sahar Roozbahani, focusing on nanoprobe development and biocompatibility studies.
