Cedric Feschotte is the Barbara McClintock Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Cornell University, where he also leads Diversity and Inclusion initiatives in his department. He is affiliated with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and is a member of the Graduate Fields of Genetics, Genomics and Development, and Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology. His research focuses on mobile genetic elements, such as transposons and endogenous viruses, in vertebrate genomes, including humans. His lab employs integrative approaches combining functional genomics, biochemistry, and genetics to study these elements' roles in evolution, physiology, and disease. Recent work includes investigating transposable elements' impact on innate immunity, development, and genome architecture. Dr. Feschotte teaches courses in critical thinking in genetics and undergraduate research. He is the director of the Feschotte Lab, which has contributed to interdisciplinary collaborations, such as seed grants fostering research on disease-related topics. His research spans diverse systems, including zebrafish and human models, and addresses fundamental questions about transposon propagation and their co-option into host functions. Notable contributions include studies on HIV resistance mechanisms and the evolutionary origins of innate immune proteins from viral elements.
