Andrew Truman, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His research focuses on molecular chaperones, particularly Hsp70, exploring their roles in cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and cellular stress responses. His lab investigates post-translational modifications (the 'Chaperone Code') and client interactions, using interdisciplinary approaches including biochemistry, proteomics, and model organisms. Dr. Truman’s laboratory is part of the Charlotte Group for Proteostasis Research (CGPR), a network studying protein homeostasis across diverse systems. His lab occupies 1,200 sq. ft. in Woodward Hall, equipped with dedicated cell culture facilities. Research areas include Hsp70’s role in neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., ALS, Alzheimer’s), cancer drug resistance mechanisms, and evolutionary chaperone function in marine organisms. His lab actively recruits undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers. Key projects include understanding Hsp70 phosphorylation’s impact on tumorigenesis, aging, and host-pathogen interactions, as well as developing CRISPR-based tools to study chaperone function.
