Dr. Jose Barrero Sanchez is a Principal Research Scientist and Team Leader at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) , where he leads the Legume Engineering Team within the Pests and Diseases Group. His research focuses on developing genetically modified cowpea varieties with traits like insect resistance (Cry1Ab protein) and enhanced photosynthetic capacity through projects such as the USAID Pod-Borer Resistant Cowpea Project and RIPE Project . His work has been recognized with awards including the 2023 CSIRO Chair’s Medal for Science and Engineering Excellence .
