Jacobus J. Boomsma

Jacobus J. Boomsma is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences, specializing in Ecology and Evolution. With a career spanning over four decades since earning his PhD in 1982, he has established himself as a leading authority in evolutionary biology, particularly in social evolution and insect symbiosis research.

His research focuses on the biology of cooperation and conflict to understand adaptive design by natural selection, with particular emphasis on social insects. Boomsma has conducted extensive fieldwork on fungus-growing ants for 25 years through the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama, while also initiating research programs across Denmark, Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia. His work combines molecular methods with kin-selection theory to address questions about evolutionary transitions in organizational complexity. More recently, he has expanded his research to include evolutionary medicine applications using Danish public health data.

Boomsma's publication record is exceptional, with over 325 publications in Google Scholar, more than 23,900 citations, and an h-index of 85. His work appears in top-tier journals including 5 papers in Nature, 7 in Science, 10 in PNAS, and numerous other high-impact publications.
