Dr. Elisabetta Pizzul (BIO/07 - Ecology) is a University Researcher at the Department of Life Sciences, University of Trieste, with ongoing projects focused on freshwater ecology and environmental monitoring. Active in the Interreg V-A Italia-Slovenia GREVISLIN project (2019-2021) and multiple current initiatives related to aquatic biodiversity assessment.
- Education: Biology graduate (University of Trieste, 1990)
- Appointments: Tenured since 1998, current member of Italian Association of Freshwater Ichthyologists (AIIAD) board
Research Interests:
Central to her work is the analysis of biotic indices for water quality assessment under Directive 2000/60/EC, with specific focus on macrozoobenthos and freshwater fish communities. Key projects include:
- Ecological investigations of alpine lakes as climate change sentinels
- Microplastic contamination studies in freshwater food webs
- Trota fario eradication program in Val Rosandra Nature Reserve
- Hydrological monitoring of Doberdò Karst Lake dynamics
Scientific Collaborations:
Major partnerships with
- Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont, Liguria, and Aosta Valley
- ARPA Friuli Venezia Giulia (since 2009)
- Prof. Monia Renzi's laboratory at DSV
- Bioscience Research Center Orbetello
Publications Trends:
Her recent work emphasizes microplastic impacts on benthic invertebrates, karst lake ecology, and biotic index applications for water quality assessment. Key methodologies include electrofishing surveys, trophic web analysis, and multivariate ecological modeling.
Research Leadership:
Currently coordinates the Brown Trout Eradication Project in Val Rosandra stream and participates in the iNEST Innovation Ecosystem initiative. Her work spans both lotic and lentic environments, with particular attention to transitional water systems and high-mountain lakes.
