Shihoko Kojima is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Science at Virginia Tech. Her research focuses on mammalian circadian biology, integrating genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, neuroscience, and molecular/cellular biology to understand how the circadian clock regulates physiological and behavioral rhythms. She has held positions at Virginia Tech since 2015, transitioning from Assistant Professor to her current rank. Ph.D. in Health Sciences from University of Tokyo (2003) M. Pharm. and B. Pharm. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Osaka University (2000, 1998) Her research explores the molecular mechanisms underlying circadian rhythmicity, particularly how cell-autonomous oscillators drive rhythmic mRNA and protein expression. Key techniques include transcriptomics (bulk and single-cell), bioinformatics, machine learning, and mathematical modeling. She investigates RNA synthesis/degradation dynamics, non-coding RNAs, and poly(A) tail regulation in circadian control. Recent trends in her publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches: machine learning for circadian transcription prediction, rhythmic RNA dynamics in mammals and plants, and the role of antisense RNAs and poly(A) regulation. Awards include the 2013 Japanese Society for Chronobiology Young Investigator Award and a 1999 Japan Scholarship Foundation grant. 2013 Young Investigator Award, Japanese Society for Chronobiology 1999 Japan Scholarship Foundation Graduate Student Support Ben, a lab member, recently completed his dissertation on circadian RNA patterns, and Juan departed to pursue a Ph.D. in the Cortes lab.
