Benjamin Young is Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Nevada, Reno, with joint appointments in the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Graduate Program and Institute for Neuroscience. His interdisciplinary research bridges philosophy of mind, cognitive neuroscience, and sensory psychology with specialized expertise in olfactory perception. Education History: Ph.D. Philosophy, City University of New York Graduate Center (2011) Research explores philosophical questions of consciousness, perception, and representation through empirical studies of smell. Key contributions include quality space theory in olfaction, examinations of non-conceptual content in sensory experience, and theories of olfactory objecthood. Recent monographs address philosophical dimensions of smell perception (Stinking Philosophy! MIT Press 2024) and unconscious aspects of selfhood. Articles demonstrate consistent focus on olfactory phenomena (80%) and consciousness theories (20%), with methodological innovation in integrating philosophical analysis with neuroscientific evidence. Teaches courses including Philosophy of Cognitive Science, Neuroethics, and Metaphysics.
