David Schaal is an Associate Teaching Professor and lead multimedia instructor at the University of Colorado Boulder, affiliated with the ATLAS Institute within the College of Engineering and Applied Science. He has been a faculty member since the institute's founding in 1998, serving as its first hire. He directs the Sound Audio Frequency Lab and teaches courses in sound, interactive sound, and sound lab for the Creative Technology and Design (CTD) program. His work bridges art and technology, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. Education: David holds a BFA and Psychology degree (Magna Cum Laude honors thesis) and a terminal MFA in integrated art, combining art and technology. His digital art has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Research interests include sound technology, sound design, accessible technology, universal design, and interdisciplinary methodologies. He actively contributes to media and arts communities, serving on the board of the Center for Media, Arts and Performance (CMAP) and as faculty sponsor for the Music Production Club (MPC). Previously, he served on the board of International Cities of Advanced Sound (ICAS) and led education initiatives at the Communikey Festival of Electronic Arts (CMKY). He is also involved in the Boulder Experiments in Art and Technology (BEAT) and Rocky Mountain Synth communities, and serves as a beta tester for software like Ableton and Max. Lab affiliations include the Sound Audio Frequency Lab and the ATLAS Institute’s facilities. His work focuses on both academic innovation and community engagement in sound and digital media.
