Previously, he held roles as an Associate Professor at Northwestern University and remains an Adjunct Professor there. He completed his PhD at the University of Queensland in 2007 and a postdoctoral fellowship at UQ’s CCRE-Spine. His research focuses on spinal cord anatomy, muscle degeneration, whiplash injuries, and pain mechanisms using advanced MRI techniques. Key projects include the MuscleMap initiative and studies on neuromuscular mechanisms in whiplash recovery. He leads international collaborations with institutions in Canada and the U.S., exploring topics like post-surgical pain and swallowing deficits post-trauma. He has secured over $30M in research funding, authored 175+ publications, and received awards such as the Catherine Worthingham Fellowship and Distinguished Alumnus recognitions. His lab integrates disciplines like radiology, biomedical engineering, and physiotherapy to address chronic pain and trauma recovery. Current students include Brian KIM and Janine STIRLING. He advises on grants totaling millions, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to musculoskeletal and neurological challenges. His work bridges clinical practice, imaging innovation, and translational research, aiming to improve diagnostics and therapies for spinal and musculoskeletal conditions.
