Kyriaki Bakirtzis is an Adjunct Lecturer in Biology with a Ph.D. in Medicine from Boston University (2010), an M.Sc. in Immunology/Cancer Biology from Brunel University of London (2000), and a B.Sc. in Biology from Royal Holloway University of London (1999). Her research spans molecular mechanisms in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colon cancer, and neurogastroenterology, focusing on exosome-mediated miRNA signaling, neurotensin pathways, and hypoxia-related angiogenesis. She has led NIH-funded projects on miR-21 in colonic inflammation and HIF-1α-miR-210 signaling in colitis. Her work also explores cerebellar glucose transport and lipid metabolism. Education: Ph.D., Medicine, Boston University (2010) M.Sc., Immunology/Cancer Biology, Brunel University of London (2000) B.Sc., Biology, Royal Holloway University of London (1999) Her research projects include collaborations with NIH and CCFA, and she has presented at major conferences like Digestive Disease Week (DDW), receiving awards for her keynote speeches and Poster of Distinction. Kyriaki has contributed to understanding neurotensin and substance P signaling in intestinal inflammation and cancer, with publications in journals such as Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol , Nature Microbiology , and The Journal of Biological Chemistry . Scientific Awards: Keynote Speaker, Digestive Disease Week (2017, 2011) Junior Faculty Award, Day of Medical Research (2014) Research Fellowship Award, CCFA (2011) She has also developed protocols for pre-adipocyte isolation and primary neuron cultures, with a focus on Glut4 vesicle function in the central nervous system. Her current roles include Scientific Director at ELPEN Pharmaceutical Co. and Academic Program Coordinator for the Panhellenic Association of Pharmaceutical Industry.
