Andrew David Patterson is a Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Pennsylvania State University, with appointments in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, the Penn State Cancer Institute, the One Health Microbiome Center, and the Center for Cannabis and Natural Product Pharmaceuticals (CCNPP). His research focuses on the complex interactions between host metabolism and the gut microbiome.
Dr. Patterson's research interests span several interconnected areas related to host-microbiome interactions:
- Gut Microbiota and its role in health and disease
- Metabolomics approaches to understanding host-microbiome crosstalk
- Bile acid metabolism and signaling
- Aryl hydrocarbon receptor biology
- Environmental chemical impacts on host-microbiome interactions
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease mechanisms
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on the gut microbiome's role in health and disease, with particular attention to how dietary components, environmental chemicals, and host metabolism interact. His work combines advanced metabolomics techniques with microbiome analysis to uncover novel mechanisms of host-microbiome communication, particularly in relation to bile acids, nuclear receptors, and environmental exposures.
Dr. Patterson has received significant research funding from multiple NIH institutes, including the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and the National Cancer Institute. His current projects examine environmental chemical impacts on host-microbiome interactions (2023-2026), FXR and gut microbiome modulation of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (2019-2024), and an integrative analysis of metabolic phenotypes training program (2020-2025).
With over 230 publications and an h-index of 70, Dr. Patterson has established himself as a leader in the field of host-microbiome-metabolome interactions. His work bridges basic science with potential clinical applications in metabolic and inflammatory diseases, contributing to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
