Dr. Jessica Ferrell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Integrative Medical Sciences at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). She holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Kent State University (2010), an M.S. in Zoology from The University of Akron (2005), and a B.S. in Biology from Kent State (2003). Her research focuses on bile acid physiology, liver disease pathogenesis, and circadian rhythm impacts on metabolic health. She joined NEOMED in 2011 as a postdoc, became a Research Assistant Professor in 2015, and transitioned to a tenure-track role in 2022.
Dr. Ferrell’s work explores how bile acid signaling interacts with the gut-brain-liver axis in conditions like alcoholic liver disease and metabolic syndrome. Her lab investigates mechanisms linking circadian disruption to lipid and bile acid dysregulation. Key awards include the 2022 ASBMB Early Career Faculty Award and recognition for groundbreaking research highlighted in The New York Times (2016).
Her scientific contributions span over 30 peer-reviewed articles, with recent emphasis on TGR5 and FXR receptor signaling in fibrosis, metabolic dysfunction, and cancer chronobiology. She actively presents at conferences like the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and collaborates with leaders in hepatology and chronobiology.
