Peter Fickert is a Professor of Medicine and Head of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Medical University of Graz, Austria. He leads the Research Unit for Experimental and Molecular Hepatology.
- Education: MD from University of Graz (1993)
- Training: Residency in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology/Hepatology (1993-1999), Research Fellowship in Molecular/Cell Biology (1998-1999), Intensive Care Medicine Subspecialty (2002-2005)
His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of cholestatic liver diseases and systemic complications of bile acid (BA) accumulation. Key work includes BA-induced hepatocyte injury, development of nor-ursodeoxycholic acid as a therapeutic agent (with clinical trials in primary sclerosing cholangitis), and BA regulation of autophagy via FXR/TGR5 receptors. His studies bridge molecular hepatology and systemic pathophysiology.
Current projects investigate BA roles in adrenal function, lipid metabolism, and cross-organ autophagy deregulation in chronic cholestasis. His work has generated international patents and clinical trial activity.
- Scientific Awards:
- WO2006119803 patent for nor-ursodeoxycholic acid in cholestatic diseases
- European Patent 07 113 107.2 for nor-ursodeoxycholic acid in atherosclerosis
He has served as Deputy of the Interim Head of Division (2013-2014) and holds GCP certification (2014, 2016). Former advisees include Lei Liu and Alex Zaufel.
