Carmen Faso is a Professor at the Institute of Cell Biology, University of Bern, and serves as a Multidisciplinary Center for Infectious Diseases (MCID) Interfaculty Lecturer and Group Leader. Her research focuses on unconventional protein secretion (UPS) and membrane trafficking in parasitic protists, particularly Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica. She leads a multidisciplinary team involving molecular parasitology, mucosal immunology, and biomedical engineering to develop translational approaches for parasite-host interactions. Current projects include organoid-based co-cultivation systems and microfluidics platforms for studying intestinal infections.
Her recent publications highlight advancements in understanding UPS mechanisms, endocytic compartments, and phosphoinositide signaling in Giardia lamblia. These works span molecular biology, cell biology, and evolutionary biology, with applications in parasitology and drug development.
Scientific awards and funding sources include grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Ruth and Artur Scherbarth Foundation. Collaborations extend to institutions like the University of Zurich, BNITM Hamburg, BIOCEV Prague, and Uppsala University.
Her laboratory includes PhD students Dawid Warmus, Jonas Luginbühl, and Mathi Funk, and former lab members such as Dr. Shweta V. Pipaliya, Dr. Zahra Rezaei, and Tim Schärer. The group also collaborates with technical staff like Dr. Corina Wirdnam.
