Dr. W. Jellema is a Senior Instrument Scientist at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Science and Engineering and affiliated with the Netherlands Institute for Space Research (SRON). He specializes in astronomical instrumentation, focusing on space observatories, terahertz technology, and optical systems. His work includes developing instruments for missions like SPICA and MICADO, emphasizing high-resolution spectroscopy and cryogenic systems. Jellema has contributed to over 70 peer-reviewed publications, with recent research exploring ultra-sensitive detectors for space-borne polarimeters and cryogenic motor characterization. His expertise spans optomechanical design, interferometry, and instrument calibration for ground and space-based telescopes. Collaborations include projects with the European Space Agency and international teams in astrophysics and engineering. Key projects include the SAFARI instrument for SPICA, a far-infrared spectrometer, and the MICADO atmospheric dispersion corrector for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). His research addresses challenges in optical performance, detector sensitivity, and instrument stability under cryogenic conditions. Jellema's contributions advance observational capabilities for studying galaxy evolution, cosmic dust, and molecular clouds in obscured regions of the universe.
