Dr. Wolter Paans serves as a coordinating professor of the Nursing Diagnostics research group at Hanze University of Applied Sciences (HUAS), School of Nursing in Groningen, the Netherlands. He holds multiple lecturing positions including Early Care, Center of Expertise Healthy Aging, and Nursing Diagnostics. Additionally, he maintains a 0.4 FTE appointment as a clinical researcher within the Intensive Care Adults Unit (Department of Critical Care) at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).
His educational background includes a PhD in Assessment and Diagnosis from Catholic University Leuven (awarded February 15, 2011), an MSc in nursing sciences, and a bachelor's degree in nursing education. With over 25 years of experience in nursing education, Dr. Paans specializes in blended learning and e-learning methodologies.

Dr. Paans' research focuses on theoretical and applied aspects of diagnostic issues, critical reasoning skills, nursing documentation, interdisciplinary transfer, and development of electronic personal health environments. His current primary focus is Point of Care Testing (bed-side diagnostics by nurses). His methodological expertise spans both qualitative approaches (focus groups, Delphi panels, in-depth interviews) and quantitative methods (psychometric testing, randomized controlled trials).
His recent publications demonstrate strong engagement with compassionate care, family involvement in hospital care, ICU nutritional status, and technology adoption in nursing. The research output shows consistent productivity with 173 publications to date, including numerous articles in 2024-2025 across nursing, critical care, and healthcare technology domains.

His work contributes significantly to nursing diagnostics methodology, family-centered care approaches, and implementation of technology in clinical nursing practice.
