Prof. Jan ter Maaten is affiliated with the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Groningen (UMCG), holding dual appointments in the Department of Critical Care, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Emergency Medicine (CAPE) and the Lifelong Learning, Education & Assessment Research Network (LEARN). He is an active member of multiple professional organizations including the Nederlandse Internisten Vereniging (NIV), Nederlandse Vereniging van Internisten Acute Geneeskunde (NVIAG), European Society for Emergency Medicine (EUSEM), and American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), contributing to both clinical and educational advancements since 2023.
His research focuses on emergency medicine innovations, critical care protocols, and infectious disease diagnostics. Key areas include point-of-care ultrasound applications for fracture detection, sepsis recognition strategies, oxygen saturation management to prevent hyperoxia, and clinical prediction models for safe patient discharge. He has also contributed to educational research through LEARN, emphasizing lifelong learning and assessment methodologies in medical education.
Prof. ter Maaten co-developed the AcuteLines biobank initiative, a collaborative dataset involving patient smart data and biological samples from emergency rooms, aiming to improve acute care practices. He has presented on critical decision-making processes in emergency units and is involved in observational studies to refine clinical protocols. His work frequently addresses SDGs related to good health and well-being (SDG 3) through evidence-based practice and diagnostic tool development.
Professional activities include membership roles in major medical societies and a 2024 invited presentation at the Critical Decision Unit UMCG.
