Walter van den Bergh is a Professor at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), affiliated with the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Department of Critical care, Anesthesiology, Peri-operative and Emergency medicine (CAPE). His research focuses on neurocritical care, intensive care unit management, and perioperative outcomes in complex surgical cases. He contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health equity and quality healthcare access.
His research interests include subarachnoid hemorrhage management, delayed cerebral ischemia prevention, and optimizing care for patients with hematologic malignancies in ICU settings. Collaborations span drug interaction studies, cardiac surgery protocols, and predictive modeling for patient outcomes.
Recent work addresses ventilation strategies for ARDS patients, perioperative stroke risks during cardiothoracic surgery, and plasma types in neonatal cardiac procedures. He serves as Editor of the Netherlands Journal of Critical Care and is a Member of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Intensive Care (NVIC).
