Dr. Mark Miles is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences at RMIT University. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of inflammation, viral pathogenesis, and cancer biology, with a particular emphasis on respiratory viruses, TLR signaling pathways, and metastatic processes. He investigates how host immune responses to pathogens like influenza and RSV contribute to acute and chronic disease outcomes, including sex-dependent disparities in inflammation. His work also explores the role of endosome-lysosome systems in cancer metastasis and the development of therapeutic strategies targeting these pathways. Key research areas include: Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Oncology, Immunology, Medical Microbiology, and Pharmacology. Recent studies highlight TLR7's dual role in mediating inflammation during influenza infection while preventing long-term airway dysfunction, as well as sporadic BRAF/KRAS mutations' contributions to colorectal cancer progression. He has also examined how early-life respiratory infections influence gut-associated immunity in adulthood and the vascular effects of maternal influenza infection. Dr. Miles' publications span 2022–2025, addressing topics like TLR9-based immunotherapy for prostate cancer, aspirin's protective effects in pregnancy-related influenza complications, and molecular mechanisms of apoptosis regulation via BIRC2 proteins. His research combines experimental models with genomic and proteomic approaches to uncover translational insights into viral diseases and oncology.
