Andrew Greenhalgh is a Research Fellow in the Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine. His research focuses on neuroimmunological mechanisms linking immune cells to brain function and recovery from injury. His lab investigates how resident and recruited immune cells influence anxiety, cognition, and mental health post-injury, particularly in contexts like concussion and neurodegenerative diseases. Education: Completed a PhD in 2011 titled 'Actions of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist in cerebral ischaemia' under supervisors Prof. Rothwell and Dr. Tyrrell. Research Interests: Microglia biology, neuroinflammation, meningeal immunity, omega-3 fatty acid effects on brain health, and immune regulation in CNS injury. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing health and well-being (Goal 3). Recent Articles: His most cited work includes a 2022 review on microglial states and a 2020 study on omega-3 fatty acids' role in synaptic phagocytosis. Key themes include immune-brain interactions, neuroprotective strategies, and translational neuroscience. Labs/Teams: Leads research on neuroimmune interactions at the Lydia Becker Institute, collaborating internationally on projects like meningeal immune landscapes in genetic disorders (2024) and spinal cord injury recovery mechanisms (2018).
