Claudio Greco is a Lecturer in Biosciences at Swansea University. He holds a PhD in Organic and Biological Chemistry from the University of Bristol (2013–2017) and an MChem in Chemistry with Industrial Experience from the University of Manchester (2009–2013). His research focuses on identifying bioactive natural products from fungi in competitive environments, investigating their biosynthesis, and exploring ecological roles and applications in medicine and agriculture. He leads the Greco Lab, which employs metabolomics, genetics, and bioinformatics to discover and characterize fungal metabolites. Greco’s career includes roles at the John Innes Centre (2019–2022) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2017–2019). He is currently funded by a BBSRC grant (2021–2023) for research into antagonistic interactions in competitive ecosystems. He teaches the module BIO343: Biotechnology of Natural Products, emphasizing practical applications of natural compounds in sustainability and health. His research highlights include contributions to the MIBiG 4.0 database, uncovering novel fungal species with biocontrol potential, and elucidating biosynthetic pathways for antimicrobial compounds. He collaborates widely, co-supervising PhD and MRes students on projects like microbial community impacts on microalgal cultivation and seagrass microbiome analysis.
