Gretchen North is the John W. McMenamin Endowed Chair in Biology at Occidental College, appointed in 1997. She holds a B.A. from Stanford University, an M.A. from the University of Connecticut, an M.A. from the College of William and Mary, and a Ph.D. from UCLA. Her office is located in Bioscience 307, with regular office hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Dr. North's research specializes in plant physiological ecology, focusing on how plants adapt to environmental stressors. Key areas include:
- Water relations in arid-land plants and rainforest canopy species
- Cellular/subcellular mechanisms of water uptake and transport
- Drought resilience and hydraulic conductivity in epiphytes and succulents
- Remote sensing of plant photosynthetic functions
Her publications (2010–2023) demonstrate consistent emphasis on plant hydraulics, with innovations in measuring drought responses in tropical epiphytes, desert cacti, and chaparral shrubs. Recent work extends into astrobiology, exploring agricultural viability on Mars.
She has received multiple teaching honors:
- Loftsgordon Outstanding Teaching Award (2008)
- Graham L. Sterling Memorial Award (2012)
- Linda and Tod White '59 Teaching Prize (2015)
Dr. North mentors undergraduate researchers (15+ co-authors on publications) and post-doctoral scholars. Her lab investigates plant-environment interactions using physiological measurements and mathematical modeling. Research is funded by the National Science Foundation and Smithsonian Institution. She teaches courses including Bio 110 (Organisms on Earth), Bio 380 (Plant Physiological Ecology), and co-directs Occidental's COSMOS program.
