William T. Pockman is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of New Mexico. His research focuses on plant physiological ecology, particularly the ecological implications of xylem cavitation, hydraulic conductance, drought tolerance evolution, and plant responses to climate change. He leads studies on piñon-juniper woodlands and grassland ecosystems, emphasizing water uptake, transport, and ecosystem dynamics.
- Education: B.A. from Oberlin College (1988), Ph.D. from the University of Utah (1996).
Research: His lab investigates plant and ecosystem responses to water availability and climate change, including projects like the piñon-juniper rainfall manipulation experiment and the Extreme Drought in Grasslands Experiment (EDGE). Key areas include hydraulic conductance, drought-induced mortality, and biotic interactions under climate stress.
Students & Collaborators: Current graduate students include Amanda Boutz (rainfall extremes in piñon), Alice Fretz (tree ring climate responses), Patrick Hudson (hydraulic responses to drought), and Diana Macias. Former lab members such as postdoc Jean-Marc Limousin (now at INRA, France) and research scientist Adam Collins (Los Alamos National Laboratory) have contributed to his work.
