Moustapha Saad El-Deen Kassem is an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health Sciences, and also holds a Professorship in Molecular Endocrinology at the University of Southern Denmark. His research focuses on mechanisms of impaired bone formation and bone fragility during aging and in osteoporosis, as well as molecular mechanisms of osteoblast differentiation from human skeletal stem cells (MSC). He combines clinical studies with cellular and molecular approaches, employing advanced genetics and proteomics technologies in molecular phenotyping of patient cohorts. His primary research interests include studying biological aging of MSC with respect to lineage fate determination, overcoming cellular senescent phenotype through genetic and non-genetic approaches, and investigating clinical applications of MSC in tissue regeneration for various diseases including fracture healing. His work has significant implications for understanding age-related bone loss and developing novel therapeutic interventions for osteoporosis. Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on microRNA regulation of stem cell differentiation, chromatin remodeling in cell fate determination, and molecular mechanisms controlling bone formation. His research spans from basic molecular mechanisms to clinical applications, with particular emphasis on how aging affects skeletal stem cell function and how these processes can be modulated for therapeutic benefit. His research has been continuously funded as principal investigator, with recent projects including studies on human stromal stem cells at single-cell resolution, enhancement of bone regeneration by targeting skeletal stem cells, and establishment of a German-Danish skeletal stem cell bank. He maintains active clinical work, spending 40% of his time at the endocrine and diabetes outpatient clinic at Odense University Hospital, and teaches endocrinology courses for biomedical students while providing instruction for medical students and junior physicians. His laboratory, the Kassem-Jafari Group, focuses on understanding the molecular basis of skeletal stem cell aging and differentiation, with particular emphasis on how these processes relate to age-related bone loss and potential regenerative therapies.
